STEP-UPS
Our delegation to the Tanjidor Step-Up in Indonesia left Wednesday and finally arrived after 4 flights in Jakarta. This Step Up’s pre-camp explains that Tanjidor is a very diverse, traditional culture of Betawi (Jakarta) with some Dutch and Portuguese influences, from the 19th century, that involves an orchestra of wind instruments and percussion. Just like the diverse musical ensemble, consisting of a variety of musical instruments playing together to produce a musical harmony, Tanjidor camp participants, with their diverse backgrounds and cultural experiences are encouraged to blend in a cultural harmony throughout the camp.

Our Step Up Norway delegation left yesterday for a camp held on the picturesque island of Stord – just off the coast of Norway. “Where Do You Belong” Step Up will explore CISV’s diversity theme through the topic of affiliation. Affiliation is the act of connecting or associating with a person or an organization. It can be a connection with your family, friends, country, a religion, political party, soccer team, fan club, your class…

VILLAGES
This year we are sending delegations to three Villages
– Brazil, Denmark, and Germany –
and a Junior Counselor and 2 chapter share delegates to Village in Detroit!
The name of the Brazil Village is Ubuntu, which is defined as the belief that we are defined by our compassion and kindness towards others.
Our delegates to the Detroit “ColorUs” Village will consider the theme of diversity through the analogy of a rainbow. Every color in the rainbow is special in its own way. What if a color is missing? Is it still a rainbow?
Like all CISV Villages around the world, the Germany Village welcomes 11 year olds from 12 countries for 28 days of sharing knowledge and experiencing the best that everybody has to show, through lots of educational activities that raises a sense of cooperation and friendship.

This Year’s Theme
This year, the theme for all CISV camps is diversity, the idea that everyone is different in their own way. Here at CISV, we are a very diverse group, with different heritages, different ethnicities, different religions, culture, beliefs, languages and so much more. Let’s take this summer to learn more about other cultures, lets take this summer to broaden our horizons!

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another:
What! You too I thought I was the only one.
